An Indian national was fined $40,000 on Monday after admitting to threatening a co-worker, who taunted him about his haircut.
Rampreem Meer, who does not speak fluent English, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
Meer, who was accompanied by his translator and friend Suash Hassan, pleaded guilty to the charge of threatening behaviour towards Keisha Mars.
Meer reacted to taunts from Mars about his haircut by following her to a kitchen area and placing a knife behind her neck, the prosecution stated.
But Hassan explained to the court that it is Meer’s contention that at the time of the incident he was cutting onions with a knife and approached the woman after the taunts. He explained that the man did not place the knife to Mars’ neck.
After accepting the guilty plea, the Chief Magistrate fined Meer $40,000 with an alternative of three months in prison if he cannot pay the fine.
