Western Tigers clinched a berth in the quarterfinal round of the 25th Kashif and Shanghai football tournament squeaking past Hi-Stars FC 1-0 Monday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
Anthony Abrams settled the result in the 17th minute through a right side cross into the back of the net that evaded the grasp of the goalkeeper and settled into the back of the goal.
With the win, Western Tigers will now lock horns with Riddim Squad on Saturday at the Demerara Cricket Club ground. Similarly claiming a berth in the next round was Winners Connections who defeated Ann’s Grove 2-0.
Rawle Gittens opened the scoring for the winners with an 18th minute conversion while Renee Gibbons sealed the win in the 83rd minute. Due to the win, the Linden giants will now match skills with knockout artists Pele FC on the aforementioned date and venue.
Winner of the event will receive the championship trophy and $2,000,000 while the runners-up will collect $1,000,000 and the respective title. The third and fourth placed teams will receive $500,000 and $250,000 respectively with the corresponding accolade.
Action in the tourney is set to continue today at the Demerara Cricket Club ground in Queenstown with a doubleheader.
Alpha United will faceoff with Agricola Red Triangle in the opening contest at 18:30hrs while Western Tigers and Hi-Stars will do battle from 20:20hrs in the feature matchup.
