Former holders Plaisance `A’ stormed their way into the knockout round, crushing Victoria Eagles 2-0 when the group stage in the third annual Greatest Guinness of the Streets East Coast of Demerara tourney concluded on Tuesday.
Kester Greene sparked celebrations from the partisan crowd at the Haslington Market Place Tarmac with a sixth minute drive, slotting his first time right footed effort into the centre of the net.
Plaisance `A’ would then be given a great chance to double their advantage as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 13th minute after the final defender was caught within the foul area by an initial strike.
Tasked with taking the spot-kicks, Gilkes would unfortunately fire his effort wide of the left corner mark. However he would quickly make up for his earlier miss, placing his strike into the right hand corner from the left side of the box, after skipping his marker.
Similarly clinching their berth to the knockout round was defending champ Melanie `A’, who crushed Ann’s Grove Punters 3-0. Shermon Fraser opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a well-placed shot down the centre of the goal following a counterattack.
Tyrone Liverpool would then make it 2-0 in the eighth minute with a simple first time finish into the centre of the goal after latching onto a right sided pass.
The result would then be completed in the 20th minute as Fraser netted his second with an easy finish into the empty goal after collecting a left sided pass following a two-on-one situation. In other results, Nabaclis claimed their spot in the knockout section, edging Mahaicony United 2-0.
Carlos Kingston led the way with a quick-fire double in the first and second minutes whilst Kevin Glasgow found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. On target for the losers was Fitz Chester in the sixth minute.
In the fourth matchup, Plaisance `B’ defeated home side Haslington by a 1-0 score line compliments of a Kevin Richards effort in the 16th minute.
The opening fixture of the night saw Melanie `B’ defeating Paradise 2-1 on penalty kicks after normal time ended scoreless whilst Buxton downed BV-A 2-1 on sudden death kicks after normal time ended 0-0.
Also clinching a victory was Church Yard United who defeated Golden Grove Superstars via walkover while BV `B’ also secured a walkover victory against Mahaica in the second fixture. The action is slated to continue at the same venue on Friday with the quarterfinal round.
In the opening matchup at 21:00hrs, BV `B’ will oppose BV `A’ while Plaisance `A’ will lock horns with Paradise from 21:30hrs in the second fixture.
