A father of seven was remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged with stealing $2 million from a parked car.
A city court heard that on December 16, 2014, Kelroy Adams, 54, of Essequibo, broke and entered a parked car opposite Starr Computers on Brickdam and stole $2 million.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said the money was in the passenger’s seat concealed in a bag. He said a witness saw Adams, took pictures and tried to apprehend him but he managed to escape.
Mangru said afterwards Adams went into the interior. It was only after he had returned home that he was held and an identification parade was conducted that led to the charge, he added.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and voicing his fear that Adams might not return to court for his trial.
Adam’s lawyer, Paul-Fung-A-Fat, told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that his client was locked up for six days, far in excess of 72 hours within which a person can be kept in custody without charge.
Fung-A-Fat also said his client is very sickly and asked for reasonable bail to be granted.
However, the magistrate remanded Adams to prison until April 10.
