Dear Editor,
I respond to a recent letter by Charles Sohan headlined ‘Hinds neglected his primary responsibilities in relation to GPL and became a dreamer,’ printed in the Stabroek News of March 27.
Mr Sohan needs to be reminded that when the Prime Minister took up office in 1992 there were rampant blackouts. Some communities were without electricity; Leguan and Wakenaam had no electricity and the few power plants that existed were in dire need of repair and were not delivering as they should have.
The Prime Minister saw to it that since1992 government invested billions of dollars in the rehabilitation and modernization of the country’s energy sector. The electricity supply has increased over the past decade, with Wartsilla units available. A recent addition is the Vreed-en-Hoop power station which will increase the capacity from a current 87 megawatts to 106 megawatts.
Today there is a twenty-four hour supply of electricity in Leguan and Wakenaam. Thousands of homes have been built during the period which also boosted the demand for electricity. GPL is not only providing a more stable supply, but has also met the demand for domestic consumption.
GPL has come a far way under the Prime Minister from 1992 to now. Nothing is perfect; there are of course many challenges.
It is unfortunate that Mr Sohan, a Guyanese who lives in Guyana, cannot see the drastic transformation under the People’s Progressive Party.
Yours faithfully,
Teri Phang
