A man was yesterday granted $125,000 bail when he appeared in a city court charged with obtaining $600,000 from a woman under the pretext that he could buy a Canter motor vehicle for her.
Zamaludeen Khan pleaded not guilty to the charge of obtaining money by false pretence when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
The allegation is that on March 16, at Camp Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, Khan obtained from Bibi Sawh $600,000 by falsely pretending he was in the position to sell her a Canter, knowing the said to be false.
The police’s case is that the accused and the victim are known to each other and on March 14, last year, Sawh gave Khan $150,000 after he informed her that he was in a position to obtain a Canter motor vehicle.
Two days later, at Republic Bank, Camp Street, she gave him an additional $600,000 for payment towards the said Canter. She also asked him to see the said Canter and to date has been unable to.
The court heard that the defendant was previously charged in relation to the $150,000 he received first and appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where he was also placed on bail.
His attorney made an application for bail to be granted which was set at a sum of $125,000.
Khan was asked if he was willing to compensate Sawh but he replied that he doesn’t work for that amount of money.
The matter will be called again on April 22 before Magistrate Annette Singh.
