A pork-knocker was on Monday brought before a city court to face a drug charge after he was allegedly found with cannabis in his possession during a police search in the interior.
According to the case against Murphy France, on March 28, police noticed him acting in a suspicious manner as he was walking along a trail in the Cuyuni River area. They then proceeded to stop him and a search was conducted.
The search allegedly unearthed a transparent plastic bag in his crotch. The bag was said to have 17 grammes of cannabis in the form of seeds, leaves and stems.
France, a resident of Pomeroon, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Objections to bail were made by the prosecution on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence as well as the penalty it attracts. As a result, bail was refused and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for April 9.
