Amid concerns about the size of the Preliminary voters list, the Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB) today announced that it will be conducting a `limited test’ of the Revised voters list.
In a statement today, the EAB, which has monitored elections here since 1992, said that given the limited time available, it will need the support of the two main contesting groups, and GECOM, for this test to be done rapidly and with quality.
The EAB statement follows:
The Council of Management of the Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB) wishes to announce that it has finalised arrangements for the commencement of its 2015 Elections Monitoring and Observation Exercise.
Due to the shortness of time and limited resources, the EAB programme for the upcoming National and Regional Elections will be restricted to conducting a limited test of the Revised List of Electors (RLE) and observing the balloting process on Elections Day, 11th May 2015.
Dmitri Nicholson has been appointed Project Director for EAB’s 2015 programme. Dmitri brings his considerable experience working in the NGO Sector in Guyana, especially in youth development.
Former EAB Project Directors Clairmont Lye and Lawrence Lachmansingh have volunteered their time and resources to coordinate the implementation of the list test. Troy Thomas, a professional statistician, has agreed to provide pro bono support.
Given the limited time available, EAB will need the support of the two main contesting groups, and GECOM, for this test to be done quickly and with quality.
The EAB wishes to take this opportunity to invite persons, who are committed to strengthening democracy, to volunteer to join the EAB’s 2015 elections observer exercise. Civic minded Guyanese, 18 years and older, who are neither activists nor candidates for any political party are invited to become impartial, objective observers in polling stations at which they are registered to vote. The current Council of Management is comprised of the following persons: Fr. Malcolm Rodrigues (Chair), Dmitri Nicholson (Project Director), Mr. Teni Housty, Ms. Lyndell Danzie-Black, Fr. Godfrey Veerasammy, Mr. Slydell Glen and Mr. David Yhann.
The EAB’s administrative office is located at ‘G’ Enachu Street, Section ‘N’ Campbellville, Georgetown.
