A man who showed up drunk at his spouse’s work place, where he then verbally and physically abused her, was on Wednesday fined $30,000 after admitting his guilt.
Nata Persaud, 46, of Herstelling, pleaded guilty to charges that he assaulted Joycelyn Valenzuela and also made use of abusive language towards her.
According to the police, on April 4th, 2015, a drunken Persaud showed up at Valenzuela’s work place on America Street and began verbally abusing her. It was further related that after seeing Valenzuela on her phone, as she was presumably trying to call the police, he dealt her a cuff.
The attack was then reported to the Stabroek Outpost and Persaud was arrested and charged.
The prosecution mentioned that Persaud and Valenzuela have been in a relationship for the past 19 years and the man abuses her whenever he is drunk.
Persaud admitted that he cursed Valenzuela. However, when asked about the assault he said, “Meh raise meh hand and meh hand catch she.”
Magistrate Fabayo Azore accepted the man’s guilty plea and in turn fined Persaud $20,000 for the assault and $10,000 for using abusive language.
