The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will today deploy an investigative team to Lethem to probe a report of an altercation between a former lieutenant and the Location Commander resulting in the former being hospitalized.
“We received a report yesterday of an altercation between the location Commander and former lieutenant Shiwprasad and we are investigating that report” Brigadier Mark Phillips told Stabroek News yesterday.
This newspaper was told that the former Lieutenant Mervin Shiwprasad had to be rushed to the Lethem Hospital on Saturday night, in a semi-conscious state, after he was allegedly beaten by a group of men, he claims are Army personnel.
Shiwprasad had an altercation with his former colleague at a nightclub in the village of Tabatinga, in Lethem, and was heading to the Lethem hospital to check for a possible concussion to the head, as he had been allegedly hit with a bottle earlier.
However he was intercepted by a group of men he claims are soldiers who rained blows on him until he was semi-conscious.
No report has yet been made to the Guyana Police Force Lethem Precinct.
However the GDF will today send in a team for its internal investigations and way forward in the matter.
This newspaper understands that Shiwprasad was dishonourably discharged from the army about three months ago and deemed a deserter, after going Absent Without Leave (AWOL) for a prolonged time and was previously before the courts on a criminal charge.
He has a business establishment in Lethem which he currently operates.
