A man was remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged with trying to rob a neighbour.
Sitting at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Zamilla Ally heard that Harripaul Singh, 47, of Lot 23 Chateau Margot, was caught red-handed by his neighbour but later managed to flee.
Singh was not required to plead when the charge was read to him at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
According to Prosecutor John Singh, the attempted theft occurred on April 11, after Eddison Sam, of Lot 20 Chateau Margot, retired to bed. Sam then heard a cracking sound outside and went to investigate. Once outside, he got the shock of his life when he discovered that it was his neighbour who was attempting to rob his storeroom, the prosecutor added.
Singh tried to escape but was caught by Sam. However, the man eventually managed to free himself of Sam’s grip and then managed to jump the fence to freedom.
The prosecutor objected to bail, while noting that the accused might flee and not return to trial.
Magistrate Ally remanded Singh to prison until May 6.
