Taxi driver accused of being getaway driver in $1.7M robbery

A taxi driver was remanded to prison yesterday after he was accused of being the getaway driver in an attack that saw a man and his family robbed of over $1.7 million in jewellery.

Safraz Allicock, 30, found himself at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court accused of robbing Rudolph Mayers on April 5.

Allicock was not required to plead to the charge.

Prosecutor John Singh said Mayers was on the Vryheid’s Lust seawall with his family, when he was attacked by four armed men. The four men subsequently relieved Mayers of a phone and jewellery, valued at $1,726,000.

Singh said Allicock was the getaway driver and after an investigation was carried out, he was arrested and identified by a witness during an identification parade.

Singh objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence, the fact that weapons were used in the attack and his fear that if granted bail the accused might tamper with evidence.

Magistrate Zamilla Ally subsequently refused bail and remanded Allicock to prison until May 6.
