The National U17 cricketers were facing a daunting task at the end of the second day of their three-day match against Essequibo U19s at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground yesterday in the Guyana Cricket Board/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers U19 Inter-County competition.
Chasing 256 for an outright win, the National U17s were 17-2 at close of play.
Earlier, the National Under-17s, who started the day on 34 for 1, were dismissed for 147 in reply to Essequibo U19s 261.
For the National U17s Raymond Perez scored 23 while Ashmead Nedd and Timothy Mac Almont each contributed 19 runs.
Left-arm spinners Akini Adams with 4-32 and Keanu Harry 3-26 were the main wicket takers for Essequibo.
Batting a second time Essequibo U19s were bowled out for 140 with Paul top scoring with 52. Parmesh Parsotam supported with 29 while Travis Drakes was not out on 28.
Ricardo Ali-Mohammed with 3-28 and Richie Looknauth 2-62 were the principal wicket takers for the National Under-17s.
In Essequibo’s first innings, the previous day, Paul,
fresh from a training camp with the West Indies Under-19 team, top scored with 47 in Essequibo’s 262 all out from 76.1 overs.
After opting to bat, several Essequibo players in Parmesh Parsotam, 42, Neiland Cadogan 31, Loaknauth Khinkoo, 21, Sachin Persaud, 21 and Keanu Harry, 20, all contributed to the eventual total.
Bowling for the National Under-17s Nedd claimed 5-50 off 21 while off spinner Sagar Hathiramani chipped in with 2-22.
Ronaldo Ali Mohamed, Richie Looknauth and Timothy McAlmont, were the other wicket takers.
