A prison inmate was yesterday charged with assaulting two police officers but he told a city court that he was acting in self defence after they attacked him.
Although Kevon Alfred pleaded guilty to two assault charges, not guilty pleas were recorded for him after his explanation to the court.
It is alleged that on February 20, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, he unlawfully assaulted police constables Bisram Ramjattan and Christopher Elvis.
According to the prosecution’s case, on the day in question, Alfred was found guilty of the offence of possession of a firearm and while he was being escorted from the courtroom by Constable Elvis he dealt him a cuff to his head. Constable Ramjattan then went to render assistance and the defendant spat on him, the court was also told.
But Alfred told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that he was the victim. “I did walking out of the box and the officer pull my handcuff, mek I fall and hit me face. I stay easy for couple seconds and I turn and ask he why he assault me but he didn’t answer,” he said. “I defend myself madam and after that he and another officer hold me and throw me from top of the step and I fall till at the bottom,” he added.
After the defendant accused the prosecution of being biased along with the court, the magistrate recorded not guilty pleas and transferred the matter to another court for the commencement of trial.
The matters will be heard next on Friday, when Alfred will appear before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
