A Guyanese man was on Monday jailed for five years by a British court after he admitted to swallowing over 70 sachets of cocaine before boarding a plane for Manchester from Barbados in February, according to the Manchester Ev-ening News.
According to the news report, Wade Williams, 53, of Georgetown, Guyana,
risked his life by swallowing 1.5 kilogrammes of high-purity cocaine, which was so potent that had just one of the sachets burst it could have been fatal for him.
He was charged with importing Class A drugs and pleaded guilty.
Williams had been stopped by Border Force officers on Valentine’s Day after his flight from Barbados landed at the Manchester Airport.
An x-ray scan confirmed that he had swallowed the cocaine in 72 small packages. The report said the likely street value of the cocaine, once cut, would have been £200,000.
Williams appeared before Recorder Robert Crawford at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court and was sentenced after he pleaded guilty. There was also an order for his deportation and the destruction of the cocaine.
