Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission Dr Steve Surujbally on Monday officially thanked the Mayor for making City Hall available for use on Nomination Day, April 7.
The chairman commended the Mayor and the staff of City Hall for making the Council Chamber presentable and safe and secure for the activities.
Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green also took the opportunity to thank the members of the public for their restraint amid all the excitement, while Councillor Llewellyn John joined Surujbally in expressing gratitude to the members of the security forces whose crowd control measures successfully maintained order.
There had been concerns raised about City Hall’s ability to host Nomination Day activities given its deteriorated state. These concerns heightened after the contents of correspondence from Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle to Acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba became public. This correspondence deemed City Hall a fire hazard.
Emergency repairs were conducted and crowd control measures were put in place to ensure safety of those participating in the pre-election activity. These measures were from all appearances successful.
Meanwhile, at Monday’s meeting Mayor Hamilton Green asked Sooba to prepare a written report on the cost associated with the hosting of Nomination Day including the emergency renovations and a set of red curtains which were ordered for use on the day. Those curtains raised eyebrows as they were one of the colours used by the ruling PPP/C.
