Dellon Glasgow was yesterday discharged of the murder of Jules Walker after justice Navindra Singh upheld a no-case submission made by the defence.
The submissions were made in the absence of the jury by defence attorney Raymond Ali.
Justice Singh upheld the submissions and directed the jury to formally return a verdict of not guilty.
The young man walked out the courtroom a free man, amidst shouts of joy from his mother and other relatives.
Meanwhile, members of Walker’s family were visibly sad.
Glasgow had pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that between August 10 and 11, 2013 in the county of Demerara, he murdered Walker.
The prosecution had said that Walker was last seen in the company of Glasgow on August 10 and the following day his body was found in a canal at Princes and High Streets, Georgetown. It is the prosecution’s case that the two were conversing, during which time the accused hit Walker to the head with an object.
The prosecution had advanced that Walker fell to the ground after being hit, and that his body was later found in a trench.
Government Pat-hologist Dr. Nehaul Singh had testified that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning, complicated by blunt trauma to the head and compression injuries to the neck.
The trial, which saw 10 prosecution witnesses taking the stand, commenced on Tuesday.
Prosecutors Narissa Leander and Judith Gildharie-Mursalin represented the state.
