Underdogs Manchester Boys were crowned the inaugural Guinness of the Streets Berbice champions, upsetting favourites Unruly Gang 1-0 via sudden death kicks on Sunday at the New Amsterdam (NA) Ferry Tarmac.
Unable to find a winner in regulation and extra time, the scoreless encounter headed into the realm of penalty kicks. However, the initial round of penalty kicks would prove to be more of the same as a victor was unable to be found, with both sides missing from the distance.
The matchup would then be forced into the sudden death round where the unlikely winners would prevail as they netted from the distance while Unruly Gang missed from the spot.
With the win, Manchester Boys walked away with the championship trophy and $300,000 while Unruly Gang pocketed $150,000 and the respective accolade. Similarly both sides earned the right to represent their zone at the upcoming national championships.
In the third place playoff, NA Kings squeaked past East Bank Gunners by a 1-0 score line compliments of a Stephon Boucher strike. For their efforts, NA Kings walked away with $100,000 while the losers received $50,000.
In the earlier semi-final round, Manchester Boys sealed their berth to the grand finale after edging East Bank Gunners 1-0 through a Carlos Mingo conversion. On the other hand, Unruly Gang squeaked past fierce rivals NA Kings 1-0 on penalty kicks after normal and extra time finished 1-1.
