On Monday, the Gafsons Group of Companies officially handed over 2,000 classroom chairs to the University of Guyana (UG).
Among those present to make the presentation were Sattaur Gafoor, Executive Chairman, Ameena Gafoor, Chief Executive Officer and Michael Daniels Financial Con-troller.
In a press statement the university noted that the donation will provide comfortable seating accommodation for students in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre, the newly renovated UG Lecture Rooms (former Spicy Dish Cafeteria) and several other lecture rooms across the Turkeyen campus.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Jacob Opadeyi in giving a background to the donation said that he was pleased when he was approached by Ameena Gafoor with an offer to provide some assistance to the institution in response to his appeal to the private sector.
Daniels shared with those gathered the company’s eagerness to be part of this project. He said that the company board once approached by Mrs Gafoor about participating in this project embraced the initiative.
He also promised continued support for the university from the company and offered to help maintain the furniture.
In addition, Mohamed Ali, representative of the Doobay Medical Centre, also formally handed over 50 chairs.
In expressing appreciation for the much needed chairs, Joshua Griffith, President of the UG Students’ Society, thanked the Gafoor family for their timely contribution towards providing a comfortable and student friendly environment for students at the university and urged students to take special care of the furniture.
