The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) officially kicked off their competitive season, launching the Ansa McAl sponsored `king of the hardcourt’ championship at the Starr Computers Boardroom yesterday.
The event, which commences today at the Burnham Court, will be played in a round-robin format and will entail 51 fixtures. The tourney will also feature an u-23 division with teams playing at least four games each.
Matches are scheduled to be held Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The tourney opener will pit Knights against Colts from 18:00hrs while Patriots will battle Pacesetters in the feature showdown.
GABA President Junior Hercules said that event was created because of the need for an event of this nature. He added that while the event will not feature monetary prizes for the respective winners, the aim of the association in partnership with the beverage conglomerate is to develop the sport.
“There will be no monetary prize for this tournament but what we along with ANSA McAl want to do is develop the clubs by giving the winner of this tournament 10 Spalding balls and looking at specific needs of that club in order to develop them,” he added.
