The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) is disturbed by the intimidation tactics it has observed ahead of the general elections.
“Democracy is an important aspect of freedom and must always be safeguarded. Hence, the elections ought to be free and fair unaccompanied by any form of intimidation and violence,” the CIOG said in a press release on Wednesday.
The group added that it was disturbed by reports of supporters of one political party being attacked and injured. It said it has also taken note of the intolerance displayed in the destruction of campaign billboards, flags, banners and other paraphernalia. In addition, it noted its “deep concern” over the derogatory depiction of effigies and the vile and nasty online campaign through the social media which is intended to inflame tempers.
“The CIOG wishes to remind the nation that elections are part of the democratic process and we must, therefore, respect the rights of each other in our individual and collective capacity in our decision to elect and support the party of our choice,” it added.
CIOG also announced that it will be “playing a key role” in monitoring the elections in conjunction with the Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB).
