The police are currently finalising their investigation into a report that objects were thrown into a truck transporting people home after Sunday’s PPP/C rally at Albion.
A senior police officer in Berbice disclosed that no arrests have been made.
Attempts by Stabroek News to ascertain whether any suspects have been identified or whether the investigation was being pursued from a particular angle were unsuccessful.
Stabroek News was unable to make contact with Crime Chief Leslie James.
However, the senior officer said investigators are still taking statements from the victims. Based on what the police had said, three persons, including a child, sustained injuries and had to be treated at the Skeldon Hospital.
According to the officer, at this point it is unknown whether the attack was politically or otherwise motivated.
The assurance was given that the police are conducting a full, professional investigation without political interference, following which a statement will be released to the media.
Police, in a press statement issued on Monday afternoon, said investigations were being conducted into reports that at about 7:30PM on Sunday, objects were allegedly thrown into a vehicle transporting supporters of the PPP/C in the vicinity of No. 50 Village, Corentyne.
According to the police, the occupants were returning from the political rally that was held earlier at Albion.
Two women were struck to their head and shoulder, respectively, and a female child was struck to her left hand, the release added.
When contacted on Monday, Police ‘B’ Division Commander Brian Joseph had told Stabroek News that he had been made aware of the incident and was able to speak to persons involved, including two teenagers. Joseph said that while the incident was being investigated, no official report had been made to the police.
Stabroek News has since learnt that a report was made at the No. 51 Police Station sometime on Monday.
The PPP/C, during its weekly press conference, condemned the attack and General Secretary Clement Rohee appealed to supporters not to fall prey to provocation.
