A former magistrate was shot several times yesterday afternoon at a construction site in Eccles.
Attorney-at-Law Fazil Azeez of Dowding Street, Kitty was at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, when he was held up by a man who demanded cash. Azeez resisted and was shot to his abdomen by the armed man who escaped after persons rushed out upon hearing the gunshot, the police said in a press release.
Stabroek News understands that Azeez went to a construction site in Eccles to pay workers when he was confronted by a man.
When Stabroek News visited the hospital, Azeez was in the Intensive Care Unit and a nurse told this publication that the man had been shot several times.
Meanwhile, APNU +AFC condemned the attack on the former magistrate. The coalition said it wishes Azeez a speedy recovery, and offered words of comfort to the man’s family.
Azeez had served as general manager of the Guyana Broadcasting Corporation before pursuing law. He was later presiding magistrate at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, Leonora Magistrate’s Court and also sat at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
