A batch of 51 professional nurses and nursing assistants who have been inducted into the programme at the Kingston Nursing School Annex plan to capitalise on the opportunity to qualify themselves and several have revealed ambitious plans to pursue further studies in the medical field.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) report, this is the 126th batch of Professional Nurses and the 69th batch of Nursing Assistants to have been enlisted for training.
Twenty-one are pursuing Nursing Assistant studies and 30 are training to become Professional Nurses. Several of the trainees told GINA that they were honoured to be selected to the programme and for the opportunity to serve Guyana.
Tiffany Scott, one of the trainee professional nurses said she was happy for the opportunity to learn. “I am very young, and I think I should learn more instead of just staying home and doing nothing. I plan to get a degree in nursing maybe at the University of Guyana.”
Adrian Kemo Canjis also revealed plans to pursue further qualification after graduating from the programme. “I am not planning to stick at just a professional nurse; I plan to go on. The sister advised me, midwifery, then maybe a diploma and then a degree.”
So did Dionne Pompei who said nursing is “a lovely profession” as it will help her to serve the nation. She too said she planned to pursue higher education after the programme.
Jermaine Levi said he was honoured to have been selected to pursue professional nursing studies. He is pleased to pursue this “important” field of study and shared plans to study medicine at a later date.
Meanwhile, Latisha Bailey said she plans to pursue studies in midwifery after the nursing programme then further augment her qualifications with a Degree in Nursing from the University of Guyana.
Naomi Singh also happy to be selected to the programme. She shared plans to pursue a PhD after graduation.
Training is set to start early next month.
