The Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) yesterday said that it had provided “almost equal” numbers of toll waivers to the two major political groups for their rallies in the Ancient County.
In a statement, BBCI said that in response to media reports Chief Executive Officer of Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) Omadat Samaroo clarified that indeed both political parties were granted toll waivers.
The release said that Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated saw this gesture as a continuation of its corporate social responsibility to ensure that Berbicians are not denied the opportunity of hearing the programmmes of the two groups.
The release said that the two major political parties had written BBCI requesting toll waivers for their major rallies and this was approved by BBCI and the two major political parties were issued with “almost equal amounts of toll waivers.”
Aside from the toll waivers, commuters for the last PPP/C rally at Albion said that they were allowed to cross the bridge once they indicated they were going to the rally.
This would have been additional to the toll waivers granted to the PPP/C.
Critics have said that the Berbice Bridge is not in a financial position that would allow it to forego tolls.
They also say that the waiving of the tolls is a tacit admission that they remain out of reach for many Berbicians.
