Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) upset Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) by an innings and 13 runs yesterday at the DCC ground to keep their quarter final chances alive.
Inspired by left arm spinner Trevon France’s nine-wicket, match-haul, GYO was able to restrict DCC to two low scores, as they finish the group stage of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/ Noble House Seafoods second division two-day tournament with two wins from three matches.
France’s 4-47 and 5-34 helped GYO restrict DCC to 133 and 76 all out in their first and second innings while the visitors who batted once, made 222 all out.
Batting first the hosts made 133 with Dennis Squires hitting the top score of 50 and Cleon McEwan making 43. France snared four wickets while veteran player Surendra Herilall took three. GYO’s response was indebted to half centuries from Herilall (53), T. Liverpool (52) and Alex Ramalho 50. Keanu Harry (4-61) and Squires (3-52) shared seven wickets between them.
In their second turn at the crease, DCC were routed for 76 as France proved to be very difficult to read. He was backed up by D. Ramjakan and Garfield DeRouche who each captured two wickets.
GYO has now played three games, winning against Diplomats and DCC and losing to MSC. They will now have to wait on the encounter between DCC and MSC to know their fate.
At the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground, the hosts won by eight wickets against minnows Diplomats. In the first innings, Diplomats made 166 all out with Devon Paul’s 53 the top score.
Vishal Narayan claimed 5-54, Imran Hassan 3-17 and Steven Sankar 2-29.
In their second innings Diplomats were dismissed for 70 with Sankar 4-20 and Delon Dalrymple 3-23, the principal wicket takers.
MSC lost on first innings after Diplomats restricted them to 158 all out. Hassan top scored with 70 while Paul picked up 5-59 with his medium fast bowling. With 78 needed to record a come-from-behind win, MSC raced to 79-2 in 15 overs. Hassan scored 30.
Meanwhile, at the Everest Cricket Club defeated hosts Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) by an innings and 155 runs. Everest recorded a mammoth 389-4 before declaring. Khemraj Ramdeen led Everest’s batting with a brilliant unbeaten 161 while receiving support from Rafael Singh 92 and Chris Surat 52. Orlando Fraser collected 4-107 for GNIC.
Gavin Sookdeo’s 10-wicket, match-haul prevented GNIC from making any valuable contribution. Sookdeo, along with Kevin Paul captured three wickets each in the host’s first innings, before the former returned to bagged seven wickets in the second innings. Javed Rasheed who took 3-14 to support Sookdeo in GNIC’s second innings, also had a good match after claiming two wickets in their first innings.
