Amelia’s Ward copped the individual first and third prizes at the 2015 Linden Primary Schools Spelling Bee Competition, which was held at LICHAS yesterday.
Denzil Yaw defeated his schoolmate Shanae Nicholson and Talitha Caesar of the Christianburg Primary School, who took third and second place, respectively when the threesome met in a head to head clash to determine the overall winner. Over 20 pupils from Linden primary schools participated in the Spelling Bee competition, which is one of two educational activities that are being held as part of the Linden Town Week 2015. In thanking all those, who participated in the competition, President of the Linden Fund USA Keith Semple noted that the overall winner is a male and he declared that it is good to see a young man emerging the champion in an educational contest in this time when women seem to dominate such activities.
In an invited comment, Semple told Stabroek News that he was pleased with the level of participation and the standard of the competition. “Every year the children surprise me with their knowledge of words and it is just a testimony to the good work the teachers are doing in the area and I just hope it continues,” he said.
Noting that the Linden Fund USA, in collaboration with the Region Ten Education Department, initiated the competition in 2008, Semple said that a few years ago, a winner of the Spelling Bee had topped Linden in the CSEC examination; “This is very encouraging.”
The other educational activity during Linden Town Week 2015 is the Inter-secondary schools debate competition, which will be held live from 17 hrs on NCN channel 13 today. The topic: Linden Town Week has lost its original purpose, will be debated by the Christianburg Wismar Secondary and the Linden Foundation Secondary. The Christianburg Wismar Secondary School won the national inter secondary schools debating competition in 2014, defeating Queen’s College in the final to take the JOF Haynes Trophy.
Linden Town Week 2015 was officially opened on Sunday at the Linden/ Georgetown Bus Park.
