Construction worker refused bail over Linden stick-up

A construction worker is now a remanded prisoner after being charged with robbing two women at gun-point.

Daniel De Souza stood in the prisoner’s dock with his shirt opened and buttons ripped as his attorney, Gordon Gilhuys, informed the court that he had been handled roughly by one of the police officers in Linden, where he was arrested.

De Souza, who is from the mining town, is accused of robbing Kelly Quow, of $448,000 worth in items and Joven Wilson of a $120,000 Samsung Galaxy smartphone, on March 28, 2015, at Mackenzie, Linden.

De Souza pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 and Gilhuys, who explained that his client was arrested without an identification parade, pleaded for reasonable bail. The prosecution’s case is that both Quow and Wilson were in a vehicle when another vehicle pulled up behind them and De Souza, along with others, disembarked and robbed them.

Quow saw De Souza on April 24, 2015 and informed the police, who arrested him.

The prosecution objected to bail given the seriousness of the matter and the fact that there is a likelihood that there will be other charges laid against De Souza.

De Souza broke into years as Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded him to prison. His next court date is April 28, 2015, when the case will be called at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
