A man who asked a court to jail him saying he had nothing to eat, was sentenced to a total of nine months in jail.
Mahase Sarjoo admitted to larceny and break and enter and larceny charges when he appeared in a city court on Friday.
Sarjoo pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
On April 18, at Georgetown, Sarjoo stole five birds valued $35,000. He also broke and entered the Tiger Bay Community Centre and stole $19,200 in valuables between March 28 and March 29.
According to the prosecution, after articles were reported missing from the community centre, Sarjoo was questioned and admitted to having knowledge of the stolen items. Sarjoo is known to the community for committing such crimes, the court heard.
The unrepresented man pleaded with the court to sentence him for some time, adding that he had no one and nothing to eat. He was subsequently ordered to pay a fine of $20,000 and sentenced to three months in jail for the larceny and six months in jail for the break and enter charge.
