Earl Jerome was sentenced to 12 months in jail on Monday after he was found guilty of a charge of break and enter with intent to commit a felony.
At his arraignment last month, Jerome, 41, a labourer of 3671 North Ruimveldt, had denied that he broke and entered the dwelling house of Gloria Peters on October 31, 2014, at North Ruimveldt.
However, at a trial conducted by Magistrate Annette Singh he was found him guilty.
Prosecutor Adduni Inniss told the court that a prima facie case was made out against Jerome. On the day in question, she said, Peters was at her home when Jerome broke and entered her property and proceeded to choke her and threatened to kill her. After the complainant began to scream, Jerome made good his escape, the prosecutor stated. Jerome and Peters knew each other.
Jerome is also facing another trial for a charge of unlawful assault.
Inniss had told the court that Jerome was once convicted of murder. However, he vehemently denied this and he told the magistrate that he was never before convicted.
