A man was yesterday sentenced in his absence to five years in jail after being found guilty of carrying an unlicensed gun.
Vicky Singh, 25, was found guilty of the charge that stated that he had a 9mm pistol, without being a licensed firearm holder, on September 7, 2014, at Avenue of the Republic.
The ruling was handed down in Singh’s absence by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 3.
The prosecution’s case is that the police received certain information and contacted Singh on Avenue of the Republic, where a search uncovered the weapon. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
Attorney Latchmie Rahamat informed the court yesterday that she was informed that her client was out of town and was unable to make it back for yesterday’ sentencing due to certain circumstances. Rahamat asked the court to deliver the sentence with mercy, while noting that Singh is the sole bread winner of his family and he has no prior convictions.
After taking into consideration all the evidence given in the trial and also the prevalence of gun crimes, the magistrate sentenced Singh to five years and also fined him $70,000.
