The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is saddened by the passing of former US Ambassador to Guyana, George F Jones who it says will be remembered for the role he played during and after the historic October 1992 elections which saw the party elected to office.
“Mr Jones served as Ambassador from January 1992 to August 1995 during which time he worked closely with former US President Jimmy Carter to support free and fair elections in the October 1992 elections which brought to an end twenty eight years of minority authoritarian rule,” the party said in a press release.
Jones had a distinguished career in the diplomatic arena which spanned 40 years. After retiring from the Foreign Service in 1995, he became actively involved in support of democratic reforms in several countries in Central and Latin America, the statement said.
Jones was also a member of the US government delegation to the funeral of President Cheddi Jagan who passed away on March 6, 1997.
The PPP extended condolences to Jones’s wife, children and other relatives.
