Goedverwagting woman freed of cocaine charge

A woman was yesterday freed of a cocaine trafficking charge after she was found not guilty by a city court.

Nancy Augustus, 55, of Lot 40 Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was charged with having two grammes of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking on March 6th.

Augustus was welcomed into the awaiting arms of relatives after she quickly walked out of the courtroom when she was told by Magistrate Judy Latchman that she was free to go.

Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick told the court that although the prosecution did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, it nevertheless pointed to Augustus as having possession and control of the drug and she should be called upon to lead a defence.

But her attorney, Adrian Thompson, told the court that his client should not be called upon to lead a defence since the evidence given could not be believed, owing to the doubts which were not cleared up by the prosecution during the trial.

The magistrate then informed Augustus that a prima facie case was not made out against her and the evidence brought before the court did not positively point out her identity. As a result, the charge was dismissed.
