Imran Baksh, a Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast resident, on Wednesday staged a one-man protest in front of the Regional Democratic Council office to highlight a two-year delay in the installation of water tanks given to the community by the government.
Baksh told Stabroek News that the Community Development Council (CDC), headed by Roslin Thompson, refused to give permission for the installation of the two tanks.
According to him, he was told by Thompson the tanks cannot be installed until the completion of the septic tank, which has now been two years in the making.
Given the explanation received, Baksh said he then paid a visit to the Regional Chairman Parmanand Persaud more than ten times to no avail.
Stabroek News contacted Persaud, who said he was not in the area and would address the issue later.
Baksh said after a visit to the area by the Local Government Minister Norman Whittaker, permission was granted for the installation of the tanks. Since then, all efforts made to retrieve the tanks for installation were undermined and to date remains stored in a resident’s yard, Baksh, however, claimed.
“I will continue to protest until they install the tank,” Baksh said “If I have to come every day for a two hours, that is okay with me. I will continue.”
Another issue Baksh sought to highlight was the lack of water for toilet use in the school for the past nine months. He said, the school children have to fetch water to flush the toilet because of a broken gutter.
Baksh said “the Chairman[Parmanand Persaud] went personally to see it and he promised the next day that he would have gotten it fixed but it is nine months now and the situation is still the same.”
