Residents say the ‘A’ Field, Sophia access road, which has been left incomplete after reconstruction began a month ago, is a hazard.
According to residents, only a section of the road was completed and since then there has been no indication of a plan to resume works. The road was reconstructed from the head and stopped at the third corner that connects ‘A’ and ‘B’ fields.
“I thought they would’ve continued and finish the entire thing off but I haven’t seen anyone come back,” a Sophia, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News. She explained that there have been numerous car accidents because of the road’s terrible condition. “I run a nursery school right here and sometimes when the cars drop into the potholes, it scares the children. You would think that they would’ve extended it [the work] further, considering that there’s a school with little children right here,” the concerned woman further stated. She added that while youths from the area fill the potholes with bricks, it isn’t a long term solution to the problem.
Recently, a motorcyclist was riding along the access road when he swerved and hit six-year-old Afya Harte, who is still hospitalised.
Some residents are baffled that the other main roads in Sophia have been completed and not the one in ‘A’ Field. “I doan know why they ain’ complete it. ‘B’ and ‘C’ Field own dun long. Is not only the main road to; all dem cross corners worse. When they de doing the fus part you used to had to come through the back and use all dem bruk up roads,” another concerned resident stated.
Residents also complained that taxis would refuse to enter the area because of the road’s condition or sometimes they would charge extra. “It’s really bad; every week you got to repair your car and it doesn’t make any sense. The holes deep, deep. You come in and the road smooth then bam! Rocky, rocky,” a taxi driver explained.
Residents also pointed out the terrible condition of a few bridges that connect ‘A’ and ‘B’ fields. “Children from all over use the bridges and they are in terrible condition… My husband put two post and some wood to fix it up and they thief it all out,” a resident explained.
