Guyana lost their three-match international basketball series to Suriname going down in the final match by 41-71 on Sunday at the Ismay Van Wilgen Sports Hall in Paramaribo.
Tied at 1-1 going into the final game, it was all about the hosts in the first quarter as they outscored the Guyanese by a 20-6 score line. Suriname would extend their lead in the second period, outscoring Guyana once more 14-10 to go into the half time interval leading 34-16.
The scoring trouble would continue for the Guyanese in the third period as Suriname outshot the former 16-13 to go into the final period leading 50-29. The hosts would then conclude their lopsided win, outshooting the Guyanese once more by a 21-12 score in the final period.
Travis Burnette top scored for the Guyanese with 10 points while Jason Squires supported with six points and Akeem Kanhai recorded five points and eighth rebounds.
The tour was part of the country’s preparation for the upcoming 2015 CBC Championships in the British Virgin Islands from June 16th-20th.Guyana is positioned in group-A of the event alongside their current foes, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Bermuda.
The two top teams in the group will qualify for the championship’s final four section. Guyana finished fifth at the 2014 edition of the CBC Championships held in the same nation. Guyana in their recent international outing, swept CBC rival Bermuda 3-0 during the month of March 2015 at home.
