The man accused of causing the death of former WBA World Welterweight champion Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis, by dangerous driving yesterday appeared in a city court and was granted $250,000 bail.
Manx Powers pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
It is alleged that on May 4 at New Hope Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), Powers, 32, of Lot 102 Campbellville Housing Scheme, drove motor vehicle PNN 596 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Lewis.
The father of four who is a miner was represented by Attorney Peter Hugh who made an application for bail to be granted. Hugh told the court that he does not wish to go into the facts of the matter at this point in time. He said that from what he was instructed Powers was proceeding south along the public road when Lewis dashed in front of the vehicle and unfortunately died due to the injuries he sustained. While noting that his client is not a flight risk and has no previous convictions Hugh begged the court to consider reasonable bail for Powers. He also said that his client is willing to abide with any conditions of the court.
No facts of the matter were presented in court and Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru had no objections to bail.
Bail was set on the conditions that the accused lodge his passport and report to the officer in charge of the Traffic Department at Grove Police Station every fortnight on Fridays commencing May 22.
The matter was adjourned to June 8.
Lewis, 44, of Lot 14 Hutsonville, New Hope, EBD died around midday on Monday after he was involved in an accident on the Public Road at Friendship, EBD.
Stabroek News had previously reported that Lewis, who was also Guyana’s first world boxing champion, was riding a bicycle on his way to visit a friend when he was struck down by a car as he attempted to cross the road. He was picked up by an ambulance that was passing at the time and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital where he subsequently died.
Garfield, a relative of Lewis informed this newspaper yesterday that a post-mortem examination performed on the remains of Lewis revealed that he died as a result of broken spine and blunt trauma to the head.
