Dear Editor,
I truly and deeply pity Ryhaan Shah for the way she defines herself in her letter published in yesterday’s SN. She traps herself in her Indian self — one small part of her DNA, her narrowly chosen parts of history, legacy, traditions… her overriding culture from which she constructs her spiritual home. It seems she has consciously rejected her individual right to grow as a free human spirit. I can only be sorry for a person that expresses so well a denial of evolution.
So I pity Ryhaan as an unfortunate sister, but I am really sad for the influence such views may have on our social progress. Degraded behaviour in a mixed community, and limits to happiness in a person, are as inevitable as the fate of species, when they don’t evolve.
Yours faithfully,
Gordon Forte
