Dear Editor,
I wish to inform the public that I was admitted a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital which is being referred to as the state of the art hospital for two days 27th and 28th of April, instant, with a serious condition and for those two days not a meal was offered to me. However, I observed meals were being served selectively. At that time I did not realise there were shortages of food. However, I did asked myself what could be the reason for not offering me a meal.
While in a private hospital in Georgetown I read the news that there was a protest for food at NA hospital. Editor, it is a shame, more so because at the same time the whole of our cabinet was in Berbice campaigning, begging for votes when the Hospital is without drugs and food. In those days when LFS Burnham visited the ancient country, authorities in the region would ensure that everything was in place. And not wait for a situation to arise and then to accuse people of blowing things out of proportion. I must agree that the Hospital has a preponderance of doctors, and I must use this opportunity to congratulate those doctors who were at my bed side and who have shown great interest in getting me well. However, the situation there is like a carpenter willing to practise his trade but he has no tools. At the end of the day he is considered no carpenter at all.
I wrote a few times about the state of the NA hospital where the young and old are dying for the want of better health care and no one seems to understand the needs of Berbicians. My condition could have been easily treated in the region rather than having to be transferred to Georgetown if the necessary equipment and drugs were in place. I do hope the opposition is taking serious note of this situation, because if they successfully get there and cannot deliver the goods satisfactorily, in the next five years we will vote them out.
Yours faithfully,
Sam. T. Fraser
