Accused drug trafficker Barry Dataram and his common-law wife Anjanie Boodnarine were yesterday charged with illegal possession of ammunition that was recovered at a Diamond Housing Scheme house, where over 129 kilos of cocaine were found last month.
Both Dataram and Boodnarine pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on April 16th, 2015, at Diamond Housing Scheme, they had in their possession 180 .223 live rounds of ammunition without being holders of a firearm licence.
Attorney Glenn Hanoman made an application for bail on behalf of the couple but Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry refused bail.
Dataram and Boodnarine are due to return to court today for a hearing on the other charge they currently face. Dataram and Boodnarine along with two others, Kevin Charran, and Trevor Gouveia, were remanded to prison last month after being charged with cocaine trafficking.
The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has alleged that on April 16, at Lot 661 Silver Dam, Fourth Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, the defendants had 129.230 kilogrammes of cocaine (equivalent to 284 pounds) for the purpose of trafficking.
CANU head James Singh had told Stabroek News that the cocaine was found concealed in seafood. According to information provided to this newspaper by a source, the seafood was being prepped for shipment at the time of the bust.
The ammunition and an undisclosed sum of cash were also found on the premises.
