GUYOIL staff were not told to wear only red polo jerseys

Dear Editor,

Kindly permit me to respond to a news item carried by Prime News on Wednesday, May 06, 2015, in which it was reported that staff of the Guyana Oil Company Limited (GUYOIL), were told that they could only wear red polo jerseys to work and not green, and if they happened to wear any green polo jersey they would be sent home.

I would like to clearly state that as the Human Resources Manager for this company, at no time did any staff or anyone for that matter approach me with this allegation, nor was any employee sent home for wearing a green polo jersey.

Further, no circular was ever sent out advising staff not to wear a specific colour polo jersey. Staff are expected to be attired in their uniform, which consists of sky blue shirts and navy blue skirt/pants for the Pump Attendants. For the Cashiers and Supervisors, the colour of their uniform would vary each day.

The only days that staff are allowed to wear their polo jerseys are on Fridays, weekends and holidays.

The colour of this jersey is red with blue trimmings, which is derived from the company’s logo, which is red and blue, as is seen on all GUYOIL billboards and signs.

Additionally, the only circular that was recently sent out in relation to the staff mode of dress was an email, which was sent on April 13, 2015, instructing managers to inform their employees that while on duty, they are advised not to wear any token in support of any specific political party.

This email was a direct result of complaints the company would have received from customers about staff wearing buttons and pins, bearing the name and logo of specific political parties.

The company quickly sought to address this issue, since this company has a diverse customer base and does not want to be seen as being aligned to any specific political party.

Yours faithfully,
Ronley Kendall,
MBA,
Human ResourcesManager,
