A vendor was yesterday sentenced to a year in jail after conning a man of a $1M in a bogus land sale.
Danram Harriram, 32, admitted that he impersonated a Ministry of Housing employee in order to scam Malik Rasheed.
Appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1, Harriram initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that between March 27 and April 20, 2015, at Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, he impersonated a ministry official and claimed he had a land at Lot 25 Section D, Non Pareil, to sell. It was further alleged that he subsequently received $1M from Rasheed.
Harriram explained to the court that did not tell Rasheed he had a lot to sell but that he would be able to get one for him.
Harriram also explained that he did not receive $1M from Rasheed; instead he received $700,000 in three parts.
As a result, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry was about to place Harriram on bail but he then pointed out that he did not want to waste the court’s time and that would prefer if he could be afforded the opportunity to work and repay Rasheed.
The charge was read to Harriram again and he changed his plea to guilty.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry then sentenced him to 12 months in prison.
