A vendor was yesterday charged with trafficking ganja that was found at a stall at the Merriman Mall, in Georgetown.
Roger Gill, 26 was remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
Gill denied the charge that he had 426 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Attorney Ronald Daniels begged the court to grant Gill a bail release, while emphasising that he is a father of one child with another on the way and also the sole bread winner of his home.
Daniels told the court that Gill is not the registered owner of the stall where the discovery was made and that other persons were present at the time of the find. He said too that his client mentioned that another person was also arrested but for some reason he was not bought before the court.
But the prosecutor told the court that police ranks, acting on information received, went to the stall, where Gill was the only person present. They conducted a search and cannabis was found in some bags located on shelves and in a calabash that was displayed for sale. Under caution, the court heard, Gill admitted to having knowledge of the illegal substance by saying he was “trying a thing to make an extra dollar.”
After the prosecutor objected, Gill was refused bail. The case will be called again on May 25th, when it is to be heard Magistrate Ann McLennan at Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 2.
