Dear Editor,
An article on BBC World News, tells of the recovery from the Atlantic Ocean of World War 2 silver from the SS City of Cairo, which was sunk by a U-boat during November of 1942, whilst carrying a crew of 296 civilians, and cargo that included 100 tons of silver.
The remarkable thing about the incident was, the U- boat having surfaced; the captain said to the survivors in the lifeboats, “Goodnight, sorry for sinking you.”
In this silly season of ours the utterances of our politicians, the articles in some of our daily newspapers, and comments from those who support one party or another, have one thing in common, the alleged destruction of a person’s character to suit a political agenda.
Research into their background, is based primarily on unearthing that which is bad, and if unsuccessful, a resort is made to fabrication and innuendoes.
What is most disconcerting is that this malady affects all strata of our society. I am terribly disappointed.
What message are we sending to the youths who are part of the political arena?
I do sincerely hope that the politicians and sections of the media involved, would emulate the U- boat Captain, and offer an apology, to those persons whose lives and reputations they may have permanently damaged.
