An East Canje man was remanded to prison on Friday after being charged with the attempted murder of his 11-year-old son, whom he allegedly set on fire.
While the boy, Ricky Samaroo, was admitted in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Friday, Ravendra Samaroo, 35, a field foreman at GuySuCo’s Rose Hall Estate, was refused bail after the charge was read to him at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus remanded him to prison until June 3.
Samaroo was arrested after the attack on his son, which occurred on the night of May 7 at Gangaram Settlement. The boy was drenched with methylated spirits and lit on fire allegedly by Samaroo, who was said to be drinking prior to the incident.
The child sustained burn injuries to his face, chest, and the lower part of his abdomen. The boy’s screams alerted neighbours, who immediately rushed to his aid and took him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
Stabroek News understands that he is now due to undergo three surgeries sometime soon.
