Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Dr Steve Surujbally yesterday told Stabroek News “administratively, logistically and technically we are at 110%…we are ready and everything is fine.”
He continued that ballot boxes and election materiel were already in far-flung areas, “everything is in place,” he noted.
He said that the 2015 election compared to 2011 will see changes primarily with the establishment of Gecom’s media centre which will be providing results as the polls start to close. He continued that Gecom assessed the situation in 2011 and made adjustments to services being provided with consideration made for the hearing and visually impaired.
Surujbally stated that assessing the needs of the voting populace was taken into consideration in the implementation of changes to the voting process and ensuring that no one is denied their franchise.
The commission has also developed an app on its website that allows for person to look up their designated polling stations using their name or identification number. Electors simply log on to Gecom’s website and click the large ‘Know your Polling Station’ tab and input the relevant information.
On Friday, Gecom issued a press release recapping its various training and education exercises. According to Gecom all systems are in place and are “functioning optimally.”
The elections commission stated that it was committed to utilising every possible communication medium to get voter education messages across to the respective target audiences in Guyana.
Surujbally echoed the sentiments in the press statement when he spoke with Stabroek News noting that the commission was committed to working within the legal framework to conduct a free and fair election.
