The Women and Gender Equality Commission (WGEC) has issued a call to both candidates and the general electorate to exercise maturity and civility today and during the post- election period.
According to a press release from the commission, the appeal goes out to “all the political parties and the women in particular who are candidates to lead by example.” Further it said, “they must demonstrate tolerance of opinions and perspectives and uphold with respect the freedom of association and the constitutional right of all Guyanese to vote for the party of their choice.”
Of great importance, the commission noted, is the acceptance of the declared results “independently sanctioned as free and fair.”
The Commission also conveyed its optimism over the promises made in the manifestos of the two major parties for the enhancement and advancement of “women’s right in Guyana.”
It also expressed pleasure at the two main contesting parties for having “fulfilled the constitutional requirement in relation to female candidates on their respective lists.”
Equally, the commission was also pleased to have a female Prime Ministerial candidate contesting the elections and the diversity of the women candidates as it relates to age, race, class, location and creed. Salutations and best wishes were also extended to all women candidates contesting the 2015 election.
Gratitude was also extended to all observer teams both local and international for their services to Guyana and special congratulatory salutations were given to the Carter Center who will be celebrating its 100th observer mission.
“We all need to put Guyana first on our diverse agendas,” the commission said, “so as to build together a well governed nation in which gender equality and gender justice are harmonised.”
