Dear Editor,
The Elections have been held. The CSEC and CAPE examinations will resume. Children, their parents, their teachers and their lessons providers have invested much in the preparation for these examinations.
These children deserve a peaceful environment in which to complete this phase of their lives. Adults, particularly the political operatives, need to show respect for these children who so often are referred to as the future of the country.
The recent soundings at many of the campaign meetings and during interviews have certainly not demonstrated that respect or an appreciation of the manner in which vitriol affects the psyche of individuals as well as the collective. Attempts at instilling fear in sections of the populace are reprehensible.
Let the post-election period be one which is calm and conducive to performance of a high quality by these students. Let adults behave in a responsible manner, one which sets the example for these young Guyanese poised as they are to realize the sentiments of one of the national songs
But not in vain we’ll strive to build
A new Guyana great and free;
A land of glory and of hope,
A land of love and unity.
Yours faithfully,
Janice M. Jackson
