Opener Shemroy Barrington smashed an 80-ball century to help the Vishaul Singh XI to a first innings score of 212-7 against the Leon Johnson XI on day one of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) two-day trial match played at the Demerara Cricket Club ground yesterday.
Barrington, fresh from a healthy season in Trinidad’s senior division, retired on 103 after hitting some 14 fours and four sixes.
Fellow opener Robin Bacchus made a positive return following a poor last season with a composed 54 which featured in a 163-run opening stand with Barrington.
At stumps, Singh’s XI were on 212 with Chris Barnwell and Raj Nannan on 25 and two not out, respectively. National spinner Steven Sankar was the pick of the bowlers, bagging 4-45.
The match which was constantly interrupted by rain saw Singh’s XI reaching 17 without loss before the first rain break with the two top-scorers looking quite positive at the crease.
Barrington was aggressive during his innings while Bacchus played the second fiddle role. However, after Singh’s XI lost Bacchus to an LBW decision and Barrington to retirement, the soft underbelly was exposed.
Left-hander Chandrapaul Hemraj (00), Stephon Brown (00), Mark Ryobe (07), Leonard Caleb (04), Dexter Solomon (00) and the Captain Singh (00), all failed to significantly trouble the scorers.
The match will resume at 10:00hrs today weather permitting.
