LEEDS, England, CMC – Discarded West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards picked up two wickets but Hampshire were staring defeat in the face, heading into today’s final day of their County Championship contest with Yorkshire.
Edwards, in his first County game for Hampshire, finished with two for 96 as the hosts declared their second innings on 305 for four.
Hampshire had earlier been dismissed for 227 in their first innings after resuming yesterday’s second day on 223 for eight
The 33-year-old Edwards, who last suited up for West Indies three years ago, claimed the first wicket when he had England hopeful Adam Lyth caught at the wicket for 23 with the score on 35.
Edwards then returned to prise out Andrew Gayle for 12 to reduce Yorkshire to 80 for three but Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara stroked an unbeaten 133 in a stand of 130 for fourth wicket with Jonny Bairstow (59) to revive the innings.
Set 449 for victory, Hampshire finished the day on 37 for four, after seamer Jack Brooks snapped up three for 16.
At St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, former West Indies vice-captain Brendan Nash missed out on a half-century as Kent were dismissed for 327 in their second innings against Glamorgan.
The left-handed Nash scored 45 to follow up his 34 in the first innings, when Kent piled up 357.
This time, he batted just over 1-1/2 hours, faced 66 balls and counted eight fours. He added 51 for the fourth wicket with James Tredwell, who hit 53 opening the batting.
Set 404 to win after getting 281 in their first innings, Glamorgan were 32 for one at the close of the penultimate day.
